Carrots are usually sown where they will grow. The sowing date matters, but a prepared seedbed and dependable moisture during emergence often deserve more attention than an exact day on the calendar. Plan a routine you can maintain until seedlings are established.
Start with workable ground
The calculator places the beginning of a carrot sowing window three weeks before spring frost. For May 1 frost, the estimated window is April 10 to April 24. Wet, compacted, or frozen ground is a reason to delay even when the calendar says the window has begun.
Prepare for shallow sowing
Follow the packet’s depth instructions and prepare a surface that will not bury tiny seeds beneath large clods. Make labels visible before watering. A short row is easier to keep evenly moist and inspect than a large area sown on an optimistic afternoon.
Thin with the final roots in mind
Seed quantity is not the same as harvest quantity. Seedlings may need thinning so developing roots have suitable space. Record emergence and growth for your variety, then use those observations to judge whether another small sowing is worthwhile in your remaining season.
- Prepare the bed before opening the packet.
- Check moisture at seed depth rather than surface color alone.
- Keep weed seedlings from competing during establishment.
Choose Carrot from Direct sow in the planner. Treat the resulting dates as a reminder to inspect your seedbed and arrange consistent watering.
